Having travelled in the United States, and followed U.S. based food blogs, I was aware that they always had good quality egg whites in a carton in the refrigerated section of the supermarket. The only egg whites I could find in the UK however, were from muscle building protein companies and these were often made from caged eggs, which doesn’t fit with my ethos. I was therefore absolutely thrilled when I discovered Two Chicks egg whites in Waitrose almost 5 years ago.
I hate food waste and the thought of throwing away masses of egg yolks when making protein pancakes or other lean meals, really upset me. Luckily, Ala, one of the co-founders of Two Chicks shared me with that the unused egg yolks are sold on for mayonnaise production and are not wasted. In addition, their hens are free to roam and well looked after.
The Two Chicks range currently includes cartons of egg whites, and whole eggs as well as a pre made pancake mix and ‘Chirps’, crisp-like free-range egg bites available in three different flavour combinations.
Egg whites are a fantastic source of lean protein, important for muscle strength and hugely satiating. They are also fat and cholesterol free, making them a great ingredient to use if you are trying to lose weight or simply stay in shape. As well as protein pancakes, one of my favourite recipes using egg whites is for my gluten-free Romanesco & broccoli low-carb pizza.
